Sustainability assessment for case farm 1-Greece
The farm is located on the island of Skopelos. It is considered as one of the most successful farms on breeding purebred Skopelos dairy goats in Greece. It is run by a family with several years of tradition on goat breeding. Thirteen years ago, the farm was converted to an organic one consisting of 80 ha of owned land for grazing and about 200 dairy goats with high milk yield per lactation. The overall management system is extensive including grazing throughout the year, hand milking, and a low-cost housing system in a traditional barn. Goats are housed only under adverse weather conditions during winter. Farm’s principles are to produce dairy products on-farm for the local market and to further improve the rare Skopelos breed, selecting for milk production and resistance against diseases under controlled mating schemes.
